Miura ICL-601 driving iron makes North American debut

Miura Golf has long been known for its classic irons and wedges, but in recent years the equipment manufacturer has expanded the lineup to include new offerings like the ICL-601 driving iron that will soon be available in North America.

The ICL-601 (Inner Cavity Long Iron) is the latest addition to Miura’s MG Collection and features a hollow-cavity, multi-material construction comprised of a SUS304 stainless steel body welded to a thin 455 carpenter steel face that improves deflection at impact.

The club includes a weight port in the sole — similar to what’s found in the company’s Hayate woods — that allows the swing weight and shaft to be optimized to the rest of the iron set. For example, the 23-degree ICL-601 has an 8-gram weight that matches the overall weight of a standard 4-iron. As with other forged irons, lie and loft angles are adjustable as well.

Shinei Miura, son of company founder and legendary clubmaker Katsuhiro Miura, also optimized the center of gravity for each driving iron with the help of the variable weighting system. Pushing the center gravity deeper in the head helps address mishits that typically occur low on the face with a long iron.

“The inner cavity design is not new for Miura,” said Hoyt McGarity, President of Miura Golf. “It was first introduced with the hugely popular IC-2003. Modern technological advances have allowed us to improve on the original design. This is accomplished by integrating a 455 Carpenter Steel face (as found in our PP-9005 G) and the use of the variable weighting system found in the Hayate woods.”

The top line is noticeably thicker than a traditional blade but still offers a playable look that should appeal to better players, while the wide sole improves playability and turf interaction from a variety of lies.

“The ICL gives Miura traditionalists the opportunity to add technology to their game, while maintaining the quality and feel of a Miura forged club,” said Jason Rutkoski, Miura Golf’s VP. “The ICL is a remarkable new product that will benefit golfers from all demographics, by seamlessly fitting their existing set or adding a club to fit that one shot/hole per round.”

Miura’s ICL-601 retails for $369 and will initially be offered in a 23-degree 4-iron, with an 18-degree 2-iron and 20-degree 3-iron coming later this fall.
